Our Favourite Facebook Updates of 2017

18 Jul 2017 (09:08)

Facebook has rolled out a lot of new updates this year. They have introduced a visual search system, GIFs in the comments, and it rolled out Branded Content to more pages. We have noticed that Facebook is becoming more and more video orientated in the past year with the introduction of cover videos and sound auto playing on videos in the news feed. They say that by 2020 Facebook will contain mostly video content… only time will tell.

We have compiled a list of our favourite Facebook updates to date:

1)    Branded Content

Branded content has been out for a while but has only been made available to more pages lately. It is Facebook’s term for sponsored posts. The tool was only available to blue ticked verified pages but now it is available to all pages. If you can’t see the branded content icon on your page then you can apply to have access to it here. We use this tool for Facebook Competitions and Adverts. The client that we tag can see the insights on the post and they can also see if we have boosted the post. The sponsor will have the ability to create an ad with our post.

2)    Visual Search System

Facebook has implemented a visual search system for all of its users. It was previously limited to visually impaired users as it helped them to understand the content of photos. This system can recognise content that appears in photos and returns relevant search results. The system is called Lumos. The way the system works is if you search “blue trampoline” Lumos will search for and see photos that contain a blue trampoline and deliver the relevant results.

3)    Facebook Videos

The way that you view videos on Facebook is changing. Videos in the News Feed now automatically play with sound. The audio will fade in and out as you scroll past videos on your news feed. If your phone is on silent sound won’t play on your device. If you really don’t like the sound of this new feature you can turn it off in your app settings.

4)    Cover Videos

Facebook is trialling video covers on business pages. Only certain pages can access them. The dimensions for a Facebook cover video are 820px X 312px. Uploading a cover video is done in the same way that you would upload a cover photo. The videos can be between 20 and 90 seconds long and will be on a loop on your page. These videos are muted automatically so the user can unmute it if they wish.

5)    GIFs in the Comments

This long sought after feature became available just a few weeks ago. If you want to try out the new feature you just click the comment box as usual. There are a number of icons on the bottom right-hand side of the comment box and the third one on the left is where you will find GIFs.
