9 SEO Tips for Small Local Businesses

11 Jul 2017 (11:01)

SEO is so important for business in this day and age, but it is something that a lot of small businesses overlook. This could be because of a belief that it would be difficult to compete with a large company who have more money to spend on marketing. This is far from the truth. Good SEO can be done without spending any money whatsoever. It just takes time and work, just like anything. A small business that is looking to stay digitally connected to new and existing customers can do so using local SEO.

1. Google My Business

Google My Business is a tool provided by Google where a business can input all of the information regarding their business including images and videos. This tool also allows you to create a virtual tour of your shop. This will increase your ranking in Google.  Google My Business helps customers find you anytime, anywhere. Make sure to use different words relating to your business in the about section. It displays your business address, opening hours, phone number, and much more. Better yet, it’s completely free to use.

2. Use Local Directories

Look for directories that are specific to the area that you are located in. These directories could be the ones that your target audience are looking at. Make sure that all of the business information that you are inputting into these sites is correct.

3. Website

Having a website is a great way to increase your visibility in the search engine. If you just want a basic website for SEO purposes then I would recommend that you use WordPress. WordPress is a great tool to use if you want a basic website at no cost. The best way to optimise your website using SEO is by blogging. A blog is a website that is regularly updated and it is written in a conversational style. Reference areas in your locality that you wish to target. Keep your audience in mind with regards to the content that you are writing. Avoid too much selling on a blog.

4. Images Images Images

Add a variety of images across all of your sites. This will increase engagement with current and potential customers. People are more likely to scroll through photographs than going through search results.

5. Mobile Friendly Website

Make sure your website is mobile friendly. Just about 80% of mobile searches have local intent. You will be missing out on these visitors if your site isn’t mobile enabled. Making your website mobile friendly is very easy if you use WordPress. All you need to do is search for a mobile friendly theme. If you had your website designed by a web developer then it will be more complicated because you won’t be able to do it yourself. Your web developer will need to do it for you.

6. Use Google Keyword Tool

Google Keyword Tool is great for finding out what keywords to use on your site. It is also great for finding out what keywords your competitor is using to target the same consumers. It is a useful tool to help you plan your marketing strategy. For example, if you are a makeup artist based in Mullingar the Google Keyword Tool will determine the words that people are searching for related to your business or area such as “Makeup Artist Mullingar”.

7. Reviews

Reviews are very important in business and they are becoming more and more important to consumers online. Encourage your customers to leave reviews for your business as these will show up when someone searches your business name. 90% of customers trust reviews. Customers can leave reviews for your business on TripAdvisor, Facebook, Google, and other smaller review sites.

8. Social Media

Stay active on social media! Just having a social media profile won’t mean anything unless you are using it. When posting on your social media accounts use keywords associated with your business and link back to your website whenever you can.

9. Insights on Social Media and Google Analytics

If you want to measure the success of your SEO efforts you should take a look at your insights on Social Media and Google Analytics. You can download reports on Google Analytics about the specific information that you want to know.

If you work hard at it, SEO can build brand awareness and set you apart from the competition. Measuring statistics can help you to figure out what’s working and what isn’t and you can change your SEO from there.
